ZELZAL, currently the leading sire in France and the leading sire of three-year-olds in Europe, enjoyed another productive week with four winners, headed by a new stakes scorer and a notable double on Sunday.
The highlight came at ParisLongchamp, where WE’LL DEFEND provided ZELZAL with a new Stakes winner, his third Blacktype of the year, in the Prix Zarkava LR over 2,100 metres. Racing for Victorious Forever and Ecurie Nass, the C&Y. Lerner-trained filly was partnered by Christophe Soumillon and confirmed her progressive profile with a first success at stakes level. Bred by Ecurie Haras du Cadran, Sasu Ecurie Pascale Menard and Ecurie Patrick Klein, she is out of Skysweeper (Hurricane Run).
Earlier on the same day, EXCEED THE STARS got off the mark at Le Lion-d’Angers in the Prix de Brain-sur-Longuenée over 2,000 metres. Representing Haras du Grand Courgeon and trained by Edouard Monfort, the three-year-old filly showed a willing attitude to prevail on her return. Bred by Scuderia Waldeck, she is out of Al Baidaa (Exceed And Excel).
The week had begun on April 3 at Marseille-Borély, where BASQUIAT opened his account over 2,600 metres. Carrying the colours of Gousserie Racing and L. Ducass Agency and trained by P. Cottier, the three-year-old is bred by Sasu Mata Horse and is out of Forest Maiden (Invincible Spirit).
Later that day at Wolverhampton, KIRKDALE added an international success over six furlongs. Racing for Clarendon Thoroughbred Racing and trained by E. Bethell, he was bred by BEC Bloodstock out of Al Markhiya (Arcano).
With a Stakes winner, a double on the day and further success earlier in the week, ZELZAL continues to assert his influence across distances and racing programmes.
Congratulations to all respective connections!
