BESIEGED produced one of the most striking performances of the day at Salisbury on Tuesday, opening his account in emphatic style with a runaway success in the 1m2f maiden.
Racing for the Al Shaqab Racing & Rockcliffe Stud partnership, the Harry Charlton-trained colt arrived at Salisbury after two promising efforts earlier in the season, having finished runner-up on both previous starts. Sent off a heavily-backed favourite, he left little doubt about the outcome.
Travelling strongly throughout under Lewis Edmunds, BESIEGED moved to the front approaching the final quarter-mile before rapidly drawing clear of his rivals. The margin continued to widen all the way to the line, with the son of Dubawi ultimately crossing the post 14 lengths in front. The performance represented a significant step up on his earlier efforts and marked him down as a colt worthy of close attention in the months ahead.
Bred by Rockcliffe Stud, BESIEGED possesses a pedigree that immediately commands respect. He is a son of Dubawi and the Group 1-winning Snow Lantern, whose victories included the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket. Snow Lantern herself is out of Sky Lantern, one of the outstanding fillies of her generation and a dual Classic winner in the 1,000 Guineas and Sun Chariot Stakes.
