WOODED, LE GAGNANT DE G1 ET FILS DE WOOTTON BASSETT RENTRE AU HARAS DE BOUQUETOT↓
AL SHAQAB RACING’s Prix de l’Abbaye Gr.1 winner WOODED has been retired from racing to stand at Haras de Bouquetot, France.
A son of leading international sire Wootton Bassett, WOODED has sported a most consistent race career at 2 and 3-years-old with trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. Breaking his maiden at Deauville racecourse, WOODED was then denied victory in the 7f. Prix de la Rochette Gr.3 by a short head. His 2-year-old campaign ended with another Group place in the Prix Thomas Bryon Gr.3, also run over 7f.
WOODED made a strong impression on his seasonal return at 3 when storming home in the 6f. Prix Texanita Gr.3, leaving the rest of the field 3.5 lengths behind and reaching a timeform rating of 119 for this performance.
Raced over longer distances due to Covid restrictions, WOODED performed a brave fourth in the 7f. Qatar Prix Jean Prat Gr.1, before displaying the extent of his talent over 5f. in his final two runs. A close runner-up in this year’s renewal of the Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert Gr.3¸ which registered the record time of the past decade, WOODED was ready to give his best in the Prix de l’Abbaye Gr.1 on Arc day, against a strong field of opponents including multiple Group 1 winner Glass Slippers. Rated 121 for this victory, WOODED becomes the first French-trained 3-year-old colt to score in the Prix de l’Abbaye Gr.1 of the past 45 years.
As a sprinting Gr.1 winner at 3, WOODED follows in the steps of great sires of this era such as Danehill, Pivotal, Green Desert or Oasis Dream. From the most prolific family of Classic-placed Firm Friend, WOODED is also the first 5f Gr.1 winner by red-hot sire Wootton Bassett, who added 5 more Group winners to his tally in 2020.
His trainer Francis-Henri Graffard commented:
“Wooded stood out from the day he arrived for his good looks and ability and he was very sound, never missing a day’s work. In the G3 Prix Texanita he announced himself as a potential superstar and we were confident he would go close in the Commonwealth Cup. The difficulties of travelling this year made it impossible for him to run. As a racehorse he had so many qualities, class, courage and speed and he fully deserved his G1 win this year.”

Le représentant d’AL SHAQAB RACING vainqueur du Prix de l’Abbaye Gr.1, WOODED, a terminé sa carrière de courses pour rejoindre le Haras de Bouquetot en France.
Fils de Wootton Basset, l’un des étalons les plus influents à l’international, WOODED peut se targuer d’une carrière particulièrement constance à 2 et 3 ans sous l’entraînement de Francis-Henri Graffard. Lauréat de son maiden à Deauville, WOODED s’est incliné d’une courte tête dans le Prix de la Rochette Gr.3 disputé sur 1.400 mètres. Sa campagne à deux ans s’est clôturée d’un autre accessit de Groupe dans le Prix Thomas Bryon Gr.3, également disputé sur 1.400 mètres.
WOODED a fait forte impression pour son retour à la compétition à 3 ans en signant une victoire dans le Prix Texanita Gr.3 disputé sur 1.200 mètres, devançant le reste du peloton de 3,5 longueurs et s’octroyant un timeform rating de 119.
Orienté sur des distances plus longues en raisons des restrictions liées au Covid, WOODED a accroché une courageuse quatrième place dans le Qatar Prix Jean Prat Gr.1 sur 1.400 mètres, avant de déployer toute l’étendue de son talent à l’occasion de ses deux dernières sorties sur 1.000 mètres. Après avoir terminé proche second d’une édition record du Qatar Prix du Petit Couvert Gr.3, WOODED s’est montré impérial dans le Prix de l’Abbaye Gr.1 le jour de l’Arc, battant au sein d’un lot relevé la multiple gagnante de Gr.1 Glass Slippers. Crédité d’un rating 121 pour cette victoire, WOODED s’inscrit comme le premier 3 ans entraîné en France des 45 dernières années à s’être imposé dans le Prix de l’Abbaye Gr.1.
En digne sprinter vainqueur de Gr.1 à trois ans, WOODED s’inscrit dans les pas des illustres étalons actuels Danehill, Pivotal, Green Desert et Oasis Dream. Issu de la famille riche en black-type de la placée Classique Firm Friend, WOODED est aussi le premier vainqueur de Gr.1 sur 1.000 mètres de son recherché père Wootton Basset, qui compte à son palmarès 5 nouveaux lauréats de Groupe en 2020.
Son entraîneur Francis-Henri Graffard a commenté :
